What Will the Winning Schools Receive?

Winning schools will receive a practical safety education experience suited to their location.

Perth schools can win a three-hour excursion to the Constable Care Safety School in Maylands. Students will move through the supervised transport environment, identify hazards and respond to realistic road, pedestrian, bicycle and rail scenarios.

Schools in the Bunbury and Kalgoorlie surrounding areas will have the opportunity to win an On the Road safety education experience delivered at their school, bringing practical safety learning directly to students in their local community.

Depending on the winning school’s location, the prize will include:

• A three-hour excursion to the Constable Care Safety School for a metropolitan Perth school
• ‘On the Road’ safety education experiences delivered at winning schools in the Bunbury region
• ‘On the Road’ safety education experiences delivered at winning schools in the Kalgoorlie region
• Practical road, pedestrian, bicycle and rail safety education
• Opportunities to identify hazards and consider safer responses to realistic transport situations
• Interactive activities designed to connect safety lessons with situations students may encounter outside school

Both experiences give students opportunities to explore transport risks, practise safer behaviours and build confidence in making responsible decisions.

What Will Students Learn Through the Rail Safety Experience?

Children regularly travel near roads, railway lines and public transport infrastructure, whether they are walking to school, riding a bicycle, catching public transport or travelling with family.

Both the Constable Care Safety School excursion and the regional On the Road program will help students recognise transport hazards, understand important rail safety messages and consider how their decisions can affect their safety and the safety of others.

The way the program is delivered will depend on the winning school’s location. Metropolitan students will take part in practical activities within the Safety School’s supervised transport environment in Maylands. Winning schools in the Bunbury and Kalgoorlie surrounding areas will receive a safety education program delivered by Constable Care Foundation staff at their school.

Across both experiences, students will explore transport safety concepts such as:

• Stopping and checking before using a crossing
• Recognising rail signs, signals and warning devices
• Using designated pedestrian areas and railway crossings
• Avoiding distractions near roads and railway infrastructure
• Identifying unsafe or risky behaviour
• Understanding why crossing rules and warning devices must always be followed
• Responding to peer pressure and making responsible choices when travelling with friends

The activities will be adapted to the delivery setting while reinforcing the same core messages about hazard awareness, safer decision-making and responsible behaviour around roads, railways and public transport.

Why Is Rail Safety Education Important?

Rail Safety Week 2026 will be held from 10 to 16 August, providing an important opportunity for schools, families and communities to discuss how to behave safely around railway environments.

Staying safe around railway infrastructure requires people to use designated crossings, follow warning signs and signals, remain alert and avoid impulsive decisions near tracks and rail corridors.

Young people may also be influenced by friends, curiosity, thrill-seeking or pressure to take risks. In these situations, knowing the rules is important, but students also need the confidence to recognise unsafe behaviour and make a safer choice.

Rail safety education can help students understand why they should:

• Use designated railway crossings
• Obey lights, bells, boom gates and warning signs
• Avoid entering railway corridors or walking along tracks
• Remain alert and remove distractions near crossings
• Never assume there is enough time to cross
• Speak up when friends are behaving unsafely

These lessons are relevant to students of different ages. Younger children may be learning how to use crossings with an adult, while older students may be travelling independently and making their own decisions around railway stations and transport networks.

Schools can use Rail Safety Week to begin or revisit these conversations, then reinforce the same behaviours through transport safety, decision-making and personal responsibility lessons throughout the year.

Introducing Stop in Your Tracks for Years 5–10

As part of its partnership with Arc Infrastructure, Constable Care Foundation has also developed Stop in Your Tracks, a free educational film based incursion for students in Years 5 to 10.

The incursion explores the dangers of risky behaviour around railway environments and encourages students to think about how peer pressure, thrill-seeking and impulsive decisions can lead to serious consequences.

By showing how a risky situation develops, and offering an interactive, hand-on way for students to predict the end of different scenarios, the incursion helps students to identify decisions with increased danger and discuss how the characters could have responded differently.

• Recognising dangerous behaviour around railways
• Responding to peer pressure
• Thinking through the possible consequences of a decision
• Looking out for friends
• Knowing when to walk away from an unsafe situation
• Making choices based on safety rather than social pressure
